The procedure is done on theatre under general anesthesia.

The Shock wave lithotripter breaks up stones in the kidney or ureter with minimal collateral damage by using an externally-applied, focused, high-intensity acoustic pulse. After the procedure, the fragments of stones pass out in the urine.

The Shock wave Lithotriptor may be used with kidney stone that is causing pain or blocking the urine flow. The Lithotriptor treat successfully stones that are between 4 mm and 2 cm in diameter
